How to enable 2FA for your Shopify account

Updated June 5, 2026

A step-by-step guide on how to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Shopify account using Authenticator App. With 2FA enabled, signing in requires both your password and a temporary verification code — keeping your account safe even if your password is stolen.

1

Download Authenticator App

First, download the Authenticator ℠ App on your Apple device. Click the button below or scan the QR code with your iPhone camera.

2

Open your Security settings

Sign in to your Shopify admin in a web browser. Click your store name in the top bar, select your profile, and then click Security.

3

Turn on two-step authentication

In the Two-step authentication section, click Turn on two-step.

4

Confirm your password

Enter your account password to verify your identity, then click Next.

5

Choose Authenticator app

From the Authentication method list, select Authenticator app as your two-step method.

6

Scan the QR code with your Authenticator App

On your iPhone, open the Authenticator App, tap the + button, and scan the QR code shown by Shopify. If you cannot scan it, choose to enter a setup/secret key manually and type the key Shopify displays.

7

Enter the 6-digit verification code

Back on Shopify, enter the six-digit code generated by your authenticator app, then click Turn on to confirm.

8

Save your recovery codes and backup method

Set up an optional backup authentication method and save the recovery codes Shopify provides. Store them in multiple safe places, such as a password manager or a printed copy.

Backup & recovery

Shopify provides recovery codes you can save when enabling two-step authentication. If you lose access to your authenticator app, you can sign in using a backup authentication method or one of your saved recovery codes. Shopify recommends storing recovery codes in multiple places, such as a local file, a password manager, cloud storage, or a printed copy.

That's it — your Shopify account is now protected with two-factor authentication. If you have any issues during setup, visit the official Shopify help page. Stay safe!
