How to enable 2FA for your Reddit account
Updated June 5, 2026
A step-by-step guide on how to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Reddit account using Authenticator App. With 2FA enabled, signing in requires both your password and a temporary verification code — keeping your account safe even if your password is stolen.
Download Authenticator App
Open Settings on the Reddit website
Sign in to reddit.com in a desktop web browser, since two-factor authentication can only be turned on from the website. Click your username or avatar in the top-right corner and choose Settings from the menu.

Open the Safety & Privacy tab
On the Settings page, switch to the Safety & Privacy tab, where Reddit groups your account authorization and security options.

Turn on Two-factor authentication
Scroll down to the Advanced security section and toggle on Two-factor authentication to begin setup.

Confirm your Reddit password
A pop-up asks you to verify your identity. Enter your Reddit password and click Confirm to continue.

View the QR code Reddit displays
Reddit shows a QR code that contains your secret key, along with the option to reveal the key as text. Keep this page open on your computer while you reach for your iPhone.

Scan the QR code with your Authenticator App
Open the Authenticator App on your iPhone, tap the + button, and scan the QR code shown by Reddit. If you cannot scan it, choose to enter the setup key manually and type in the key Reddit displays.

Let the app add your Reddit account
After the scan, the Authenticator App adds your Reddit account automatically and begins showing a 6-digit code that refreshes every few seconds.

Enter the 6-digit code on Reddit
Type the current 6-digit code from your Authenticator App into the field on the Reddit website and confirm to verify the connection.

Two-factor authentication is enabled
Reddit confirms that two-factor authentication is now on, adding an extra layer of protection so no one can sign in with your password alone.

Save your backup codes
Reddit also provides a set of backup codes. Save them somewhere safe so you can still log in if you ever lose access to your authenticator app, then finish setup.
Backup & recovery
When you enable two-factor authentication, Reddit gives you a set of backup codes. Save them somewhere safe. If you lose access to your authenticator app, you can use one of these backup codes to log in to your account. After login you can reset two-factor authentication and generate new backup codes.
That's it — your Reddit account is now protected with two-factor authentication. If you have any issues during setup, visit the official Reddit help page. Stay safe!
